ALVAREZ QUALIFIES FOR STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Four Algonac wrestlers traveled over the past weekend to participate in the MHSAA Regional Wrestling Tournament in Williamston, Michigan. Leading the charge was District Champion, Santos Alvarez (wrestling at 130 pounds), and three other qualifiers, Adam Pender (112 pounds), Brendon Gutzeit (119 pounds) and Brandon Balogh (152 pounds). Congratulations to 10th grader, Santos Alvarez, for qualifying to participate in Individual State Finals on March 1-2-3, and congratulations to the other regional qualifiers on a fine showing. Alvarez is Algonac’s first state qualifier since 2006. Good luck at States, Santos!
KINDERGARTEN
The Algonac Community School District has offered all-day Kindergarten for nearly twenty years. Our present format of having teacher-directed instruction for half of the day and activity room instruction with para-educators for the other half day will not meet the new MDE requirement that all districts must offer all-day Kindergarten with a certified teacher for the full day. Beginning in the fall of 2012, the district will provide all-day Kindergarten with teacher instruction for the entire school day.
FEBRUARY STUDENT COUNT
Our school district’s main funding source is based on our student enrollment. The student enrollment is based on student counts taken in September and February of each school year. Our February student count was 1900 students, a slight decline from the previous February count of 1906 students.
